Policy Questions

Drugs, including alcohol, are substances that can alter the way the body or mind works.

Inappropriate use, particularly in terms of a persons employment, can have an adverse effect on their performance and can be dangerous. (Health & safety responsibilities/HSE)

The need for a clear policy

A clear policy and guidelines are an important step in creating a safer working environment. (Your employer's responsibilities/HSE)

Popular myths about drugs and alcohol

  • Are you driving, well one will be alright
  • A glass of wine contains one unit of alcohol
  • Its okay to sleep off alcohol in your vehicle
  • Alcohol affects your ability to drive, drugs don’t
  • I’ll be clear if I get a few hours sleep

Dispel the myths by implementing awareness training as part of your policy.

Staffsafe can help you get the answers to the following:

  • What will I do if I find drugs in the workplace
  • What will I do if I suspect a member of staff is under the influence of drink or drugs
  • What if I suspect a member of staff is in possession of illegal drugs
  • Would you be able to identify an illegal drug, such as cannabis
  • Do I have the power to search staff if I suspect drugs
  • Do I know what drugs are legal and what are illegal
  • Is it my responsibility if a member of my staff has a road accident on company business whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol

A drug and alcohol policy, with relevant training will assist in answering these and similar questions as well as raising awareness of the issues. (Policy guidelines: Alcohol | Drugs)
